Originally published in 1996, with a second edition in 2001, the updated third edition is now available.
In nineteen short chapters, each about ten pages long, Jaime Suchlicki
explains Mexico. "The Age of Santa Anna", "The U.S.-Mexican War",
"Prelude to Revolution: La Reforma", "Maximilian and Foreign
Intervention" and fifteen others condense Mexican history into a
dense, but highly readable interpretation of the major players, events
and contexts that make Mexico the nation it is today.

Published as a hardcover in 2006, the paperback version of Gringos in Paradise is due out this year (2008).
The Gringos did build a house, a pretty casa with wooden doors and windows from the parota tree, and the barest view of the ocean from the third-floor palapa. Thia and Barry Golson built their house, and they also built a life. Transplants from Manhattan, the Golsons desire a life filled with community and authenticity. The natural arc of the house building enterprise provides the book’s framework as well as the scaffolding for their stake in a new community and culture.

Head for Mexico is an exhaustive compendium of advice, tips and information on the nitty-gritty of moving to Mexico, living in Mexico, and connecting with Mexico. Because Adams has managed numerous border crossings, rented homes and apartments, and successfully coped with every quirky living arrangement an exuberant self-reliant, good-natured gringo could encounter, his counsel is invaluable. |
